I had dinner with my son Noah last night, who has decided to go to college for Marketing. I enjoyed listening to his ideas and brainstorming with him. We talked about the best way to Market himself easily and inexpensively.
The one thing I encouraged him to do is to start a blog. I told him that blogging has several benefits for him.
First, in writing about how he can apply the lessons he learns, he will reinforce his learning. The trick is to practice the lesson enough so that it becomes second nature. Soon, he won’t have to think about applying what he learned. He will automatically do it.
Second, a blog can show prospective employers that he can communicate. He can show that he is articulate and can state his message so others can understand him. One of the biggest problems employers have is finding candidates that can communicate well.
Third, a blog can demonstrate that he knows what he’s talking about. Even if someone just scans his posts, that person will know that Noah gets it. Any topic can be viewed under the purview of Marketing. He just has to find his angle.
He is interested, but daunted. He doesn’t think of himself as a writer. A couple of paragraphs isn’t hard, though. As he starts there, he will soon practice enough that a couple of paragraphs won’t be enough. I look forward to it!
I’ll post a link for Noah’s blog as soon as I have it.
